12–72V 60A Dual BLDC Motor Driver for AGV, AMR and UGV Platforms
The MSSD-60EHB-2D is a wide-voltage dual-channel brushless DC motor driver designed for AGVs, AMRs, UGVs, mobile robots and other dual-motor platforms. It supports FOC and square-wave commutation, independent or differential motor control, and multiple command interfaces including CAN, RS485 Modbus RTU, RC PWM and analog joystick signals.
With a DC 12–72V operating range, up to 60A phase current and comprehensive protection functions, the driver provides smooth low-speed control, strong starting torque and flexible system integration.
Dual-Channel BLDC Motor Driver for Mobile Robot Platforms
The MSSD-60EHB-2D is designed to control two brushless DC motors from a single compact driver. It provides independent, synchronous and differential control modes, making it particularly suitable for skid-steer vehicles and other left-and-right dual-drive systems.
The driver supports both Field Oriented Control and conventional square-wave commutation. FOC mode provides smooth, quiet and high-torque motor operation, while square-wave mode offers fast response and strong high-speed performance.
Multiple control interfaces allow the driver to be integrated with industrial controllers, embedded systems, remote-control receivers or manually operated joysticks.

Flexible Dual-Motor Control
Independent Control
The speed and direction of the two motors can be controlled separately. This mode is suitable for equipment requiring two independently operated drive axes.
Synchronous Control
Both motors receive coordinated commands and operate in the same direction and at the same target speed. This is useful for straight-line travel and synchronized conveyor or mobile-platform applications.
Differential Steering
The controller automatically mixes the vehicle-speed and steering commands to calculate the speed of the left and right motors:
- Left motor speed = Vehicle speed + Steering input
- Right motor speed = Vehicle speed − Steering input
This allows a two-wheel or four-wheel skid-steer platform to move forward, reverse, turn and rotate using a dual-axis joystick or upper-level controller.
Multiple Control Interfaces
CAN Control
The CAN interface enables integration with vehicle control units, PLCs, industrial computers and embedded control systems. It is suitable for real-time motor-command transmission and operating-status monitoring.
For reliable high-speed CAN communication, a 120Ω termination resistor should be installed at each end of the CAN bus.
RS485 Modbus RTU
RS485 communication with Modbus RTU support allows the driver to be connected to PLCs, HMIs, industrial computers and other automation controllers.
RC PWM Control
The controller can receive standard RC PWM signals from a radio receiver, making it suitable for remotely controlled UGVs, tracked platforms, inspection robots and special-purpose vehicles.
Analog Joystick Control
Two analog inputs can be connected to a dual-axis joystick:
- One axis controls forward and reverse speed
- One axis controls left and right steering
- Approximately 2.5V represents the neutral position
- Approximately 0.5–4.5V represents the effective operating range
FOC and Square-Wave Operation
FOC Mode
Field Oriented Control provides:
- Smooth low-speed operation
- Reduced motor noise
- Strong starting and low-speed torque
- More precise speed regulation
- Improved driving comfort for mobile platforms
Square-Wave Mode
Six-step square-wave commutation provides:
- Fast motor response
- Simple and reliable operation
- Strong high-speed performance
- Compatibility with a wide range of Hall-sensored BLDC motors
Motor Phase-Sequence Learning
The built-in phase-sequence learning function simplifies motor setup. The controller can automatically identify the correct relationship between the motor phase wires and Hall sensor signals.
Phase learning should be performed with the motor unloaded. If the phase-wire or Hall-wire sequence is changed, the learning procedure must be performed again.
Protection Functions
The MSSD-60EHB-2D includes multiple protection and diagnostic functions:
- Overvoltage protection
- Undervoltage protection
- Phase overcurrent protection
- Motor stall protection
- Overtemperature protection
- Hall or phase-sequence abnormality detection
- RS485 communication error indication
- Emergency-stop input
- LED fault-code indication
These functions help protect the motor, driver and vehicle electrical system under abnormal operating conditions.
Regenerative Braking Support
During rapid deceleration, downhill operation or high-inertia load braking, the motor may return regenerative energy to the DC bus. The driver provides an external braking-resistor connection to dissipate excess energy and reduce DC-bus overvoltage risk.
The manual recommends selecting the braking resistor according to the application, with examples including:
- 10Ω / 50W
- 4Ω / 200W
Final resistor selection should be based on vehicle mass, speed, slope, braking frequency and system voltage.
Typical Applications
- AGV and AMR mobile robots
- Unmanned ground vehicles
- Security and inspection robots
- Agricultural robots
- Warehouse transport platforms
- Differential-drive robot chassis
- Electric wheelbarrows and power carts
- Tracked mobile platforms
- Remote-controlled utility vehicles
- Camera dollies and filming platforms
- Cleaning and service robots
- Custom dual-motor mobility systems
Integration Notes
- Confirm that the DC supply voltage remains within the 12–72V operating range.
- Reverse-polarity connection may permanently damage the controller.
- Use adequately sized power and motor cables for high-current operation.
- Perform phase learning before operating the motor under load.
- Install CAN termination resistors at both ends of the bus.
- Consider an external braking resistor for heavy vehicles, steep slopes or high-inertia loads.
- Use isolated power or signal isolation where ground-loop risks exist.
- Actual continuous current depends on cooling, ambient temperature and installation conditions.
